The telecom & datators in Hoogersmilde came into use on November 24, 1959 and was named Zendmast Smilde. The construction is 303 m high in total.
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the tower in 2010, RTV Drenthe broadcasted a short report on the past years and an hour-long image registration of the construction in 1959.
In 2007 Cellnex bought this tower - and 23 others in the Netherlands - from Telecombedrijf KPN. In April 2015 it was named CJ2 Datatoren thanks to a collaboration with CJ2.
